Waltz Around the World

In choosing your fabrics for this class, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.  I found that what I had originally thought about fabric placement changed once it came to life on my design wall. Thankfully, I had purchased extra fabric.  I did one version with batiks and it was great.  I did another one with a bold Brandon Mably floral as the focus fabric and it was also great.  My pattern tester used oriental fabric and it was also very appealing.  There are so many fabrics to choose from.  Have fun with colour combinations and make it your own!  If you wish to discuss your fabric choices with me please feel free to email me at mavis@thestitcherytn.com or call the store at 423-458-1566 and I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Here are the tools you will need:

1. Pattern (available from The Stitchery) 

2. EZ Angle Ruler (4 ½” or 6 ½” size) (for Flying Geese wings/sides and half square triangles)

3. EZ companion Angle Ruler (for Flying Geese head/centre)

4. EZ Tri Tool (Tri recs) for Triangle in a Square/Tri-Recs units).

5. 6 x 24” ruler

6. Rotary Cutter

7. Pins

8. Thread

9. Scissors

10. Design Wall (and masking tape to put it on the wall)

Fabric required:

• 2 ½ yards neutral fabric

• 1 ½ yards focus fabric (this surrounds/frames the circles and can be used in the trip around the world blocks as well)

• 1 ½ yards of four assorted fabrics (in minimum of four colors)

(see pattern for yardage or purchase 1 ½ - 2 yards  of each of four fabrics if you’re not sure of fabric placement).  You will have leftovers but in my books that’s a good thing!

What we will be learning:

How to use these speciality rulers to create the following blocks all from various widths of fabric strips while paying special attention to accuracy:

• flying geese 

• four patches

• triangle in a square

• half square triangles 

• broken dishes

Then we will be playing with these units to create blocks and then blocks to create the quilt.
